NEWS FOR EVERYONE

Saturday, April 22: CORBA Trail Restoration.   Come out and help build and fix up the trails we love to ride! It feels great to ride a trail you've helped build and maintain. For more information, visit the CORBA Trail Crew page. Work days usually last until about 2:00. Be sure to wear suitable clothing (sturdy shoes, long pants and sleeves, hat, GLOVES) and bring snacks, sunscreen and WATER. CORBA will provide the tools and training.

Further info on the trailwork can be found on the online registration page (see below). Pre-registration is greatly appreciated because it helps CORBA know how many tools to bring, and to plan how much work can be done. Time: 8:30 am.

To help celebrate Earth Day, there will be a major trail building and restoration event in Malibu Creek State Park. CORBA and a number of other groups are combining their efforts to, among other things, build a new trail to replace the segment of the Grasslands Trail that was closed several years ago.

The new trail will replace the closed, ecologically damaging fall-line trail with a longer one that descends more gently to the bottom of the hill.

The work will mostly involve finishing the roughed-in trail that will have been plowed out by a SWECO trail bulldozer.

Bring a snack to eat on the trail; lunch will be provided.

Please show your support and pre-register for the event here: https://www.meetup.com/CORBAmtb/events/237532161/

Directions: From the 101 Freeway, exit at Lost Hills Rd in Agoura, heading south. Drive 1.1 miles, then turn right onto Las Virgenes Rd. Continue past Mulholland Hwy, 1.8 miles in total, to the park entrance on the right. Drive into the park and meet at the designated parking area on the left.

Or, from the Pacific Coast Highway, turn north on Malibu Canyon Road from Malibu, next to Pepperdine University. Drive 6.1 miles (Malibu Canyon Rd becomes Las Virgenes Rd) and turn left into the park (if you pass Mulholland Hwy, you've gone a little too far). Continue to the designated parking area on the left.

Saturday, April 29: Sycamore Canyon Trail Days, BBQ & Camping.   Once a year we have an opportunity to help restore the trails and then BBQ and camp at Danielson Multiuse Area in Sycamore Canyon. It is opened annually for the Santa Monica Mountains Trail Days! This is a unique opportunity to work on the trails that we enjoy so much in Sycamore Canyon followed by a BBQ, prizes, and camping on Friday and/or Saturday night. In past years a bunch of us worked on the trails, took in the BBQ, etc. and than camped in the quiet heart of the canyon. The drawing was fabulous, everyone won at least one prize and there was lots of cool stuff! Enjoying a cold beer after the trail work under the sycamore and oak trees with the breeze blowing through the canyon while the BBQ is cooking, what a treat! This is hands down the best day to get in your trail maintenance work! You can help with the trailwork on Saturday and/or Sunday. Camping is optional, you may leave with the escort after the BBQ. Following is the info from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council that hosts the event. TRAIL DAYS is a weekend for individuals and groups to build new trails and restore old ones. Partners with California State Parks include Concerned Off Road Bicyclist Assn. (CORBA), Santa Monica Mountains Task Force of Sierra Club, Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council, California Native Plant Society (CNPS), National Park Service, and others.

WEEKEND RIDES

Saturday, April 1: New Millennium Loop.   For a warm up we’ll ride the Grasslands trail and head out to DeAnza Park. From there we’ll bike a couple of blocks on the road to the Bark Park. Then we’ll climb the singletrack behind the Bark Park to the New Millennium Trail and head north at the “T”. From here there’s some really sweet singletrack riding for miles with plenty of ascents and decents, and switchbacks galore, including the "Too-Tight" Switchbacks and the Pyramid Switchbacks. We’ll stay on the Millennium Singletrack which weaves through the Calabasas Hills and affords some spectacular views for quite a few miles. Eventually we’ll hook up with the Las Virgenes View Trail which will take us back to the cars. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E4.5, Technical Rating = T4.5, 19 Miles and 3400 Feet of Climbing , About 4.5 Hours
, Ride Scheduler: Tamara

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Las Virgenes Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Las Virgenes toward the ocean. Park in one of the dirt areas on the corner of Las Virgenes and Mulholland.

Sunday, April 2: Grasslands - Short Bulldog Loop.   We’ll bike over to Malibu Creek State Park via the Grasslands trail. Once inside the park we’ll proceed along the main fireroad, which passes through a fairly short but technical rocky streambed. After a short stop at the M*A*S*H site we’ll tackle the first 1.25 miles of Bulldog. After the steep but fairly short climb up Bulldog we’ll cut off onto Lookout Fireroad that will bring us down to a paved road in the Malibu Lake area. Then we’ll take Crags Road to a back entrance of the park and pedal back to the cars via the same path as before. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3, Technical Rating = T3, 14 Miles and 2100 Feet of Climbing , About 3.5 Hours
, Ride Scheduler: Tom

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Lost Hills Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Park in the lot for DeAnza Park located on the northwest corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes Roads.

Saturday, April 8: Backbone from Encinal Rd to Mishe Mokwa.   This ride has lots of swooping, curving singletrack and some great views! We start with a gentle climb up the new Encinal singletrack segment to the Decker/Mulholland singletrack segment of the Backbone Trail, cross the road and continue up to Etz Meloy Motorway. We'll head west on the Etz Meloy segment of the Backbone Trail enjoying the spectacular views in all directions, including into Hidden Valley and Lake Sherwood. After 2 miles on the fireroad, we'll cross paved Yerba Buena Rd to get onto the singletrack Backbone Trail and ride it 4.5 miles to the base of the the Mishe Mokwa Trail. We'll turn around here and retrace our path. An easier option on the way back is to take Yerba Buena/Little Sycamore Canyon Rd back instead of the Etz Meloy Motorway. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.5, Technical Rating = T2, 19 Miles and 2500 Feet of Climbing , About 3.5 Hours
, Ride Scheduler: Charlotte

Directions:   From Thousand Oaks and points west, exit the 101 Freeway at Westlake Blvd and head south. About 3.5 miles past Potrero, turn left onto Mulholland and go 2.5 miles. Make a very sharp right turn onto Encinal Canyon Rd (west, back towards Decker), drive for 2.3 miles until you see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.
From Agoura and points east, exit the 101 at Kanan and head south. After 6 miles, turn right onto Mulholland for 1 mile, then bear left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. After 2.3 miles more, you will see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.

Sunday, April 9: Cheeseboro for Beginners.   We'll be riding Cheeseboro, as it is an ideal place for a beginner's ride. Just watch out for the big rock with poison oak!! We'll ride 'til we drop, (to Shepherd's Flat) and turn around and ride back. I guarantee it will be a fun ride. Meet at 9:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

, Ride Scheduler: Randy

Saturday, April 15: Ojai - Shelf Rd to Gridley to Nordhoff Peak.   This is a beautiful out and back ride on 80% singletrack and affords some spectacular views. We start with an easy two mile warm up on the Shelf Rd fireroad which is both rolling & picturesque.  Then, after a ¼ road ride we’ll cutoff onto a short connector singletrack for a fairly technical climb up to the main Gridley trail.  The first half of Gridley is a moderate climb and passes through several avocado groves. The second half of the main trail narrows and steepens a bit with many switchbacks. At the top of the saddle we’ll cutoff onto a fairly short but very steep fireroad that leads to an old fire lookout tower. The views from the top make the climb up worth the effort. Since this is an out and back ride, those who tire can turn back at any time and coast back to the cars. Meet at 8:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E5, Technical Rating = T4.5, 18 Miles and 3600 Feet of Climbing , About 4.5 Hours

Just before the main downtown section of Ojai(and before Libbey Park) make a left (north) onto N Signal St. Stay on N. Signal Rd and park at the end of the road.

Saturday, April 15: Caballero/Sullivan Canyon.   We begin with a moderate to somewhat difficult climb up the Caballero singletrack to dirt Mulholland. Then we head east along Mulholland a couple miles till we reach the Sullivan Canyon cutoff. From here it's a fun, fun, fun downhill all the way to the canyon’s end. The climb out of the canyon is mostly moderate and will proceed along the same trail as before. As a finale we’ll descend Caballero back to the cars. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Sunday, April 16: Sycamore Canyon from the Beach.   We’ll begin at the parking lot and ride up the Big Sycamore Trail to Two Foxes and back to the main fireroad. We'll go to Ranch Center Drive (paved bike path) and climb up for a few miles. Then we'll blast down to Art's Trail and the Sin Nombre Trail. The rewarding part of this ride is going downhill to the beach by riding on Two Foxes Trail and the main fireroad. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
